Those who continue physical activity in middle age do not show
signs of deterioration to the same extent as the untrained. Continuing
to exercise in later years not only increases longevity but also
offers the individual increased likelihood of maintaining independence
and companionship (Royal College of Physcians 1991).
It is always worth remembering that 'chronological age is a poor
predictor of health or performance’ (Sharkey 1990).
